The International Yacht Training Center conducts examinations for yachtsmen and awards Certificates of Competence to candidates who successfully complete the assessments or demonstrate the required level of proficiency.
DAY SKIPPER
Holders are qualified to skipper a yacht at sea from sunrise to sunset within 15 nautical miles from the skipper’s homeport, or 25 miles from their homeport provided they are no more than 15 nautical miles from an approved safe haven.
COASTAL SKIPPER
Holders are qualified to skipper a yacht on any coastal passage within 40 nautical miles of the coast by day or by night.
YACHT MASTER OFFSHORE
Holders are qualified to skipper a yacht on any extended passage within 150 nautical miles of the coast by day or by night.
GMDSS RESTRICTED OPERATOR
Holders are qualified to operate VHF radio station with DSC in A1 area.
GMDSS GENERAL OPERATOR
Holders are qualified to operate VHF/MF/HF radio station with DSC in A1, A2 and A4 areas and Inmarsat satellite station in A3 area.
RADAR OBSERVER
Holders are qualified to operate a Marine Radar.
The following are mandatory:
– You must be a Day Skipper to apply for a Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence.
– You must be a Coastal Skipper to apply for Yacht Master Offshore.
POWER BOAT
Covering the theory and practical skills needed to become a confident skipper, the course focuses on navigation, pilotage, seamanship, collision regulations, and the responsibilities of command.
TENDER OPERATOR
Attendees will gain confidence in their ability to handle a powerboat with precision. Emphasis is placed on day and night pilotage, as well as passenger carriage and management. This course is particularly valuable for those operating powerboats with responsibility for passengers, whether by day or night. Candidates will have ample opportunity to practice with a crew member and to operate short-handed, developing skills in pilotage for short passages between ship and shore under both daylight and darkness.
Chief Engineer – up to 1500 kW > 200 GT
- Certification for Chief Engineer on yachts up to 1,500 kW and less than 200GT propulsion.
- Covers safe management of engine room operations, maintenance of propulsion, auxiliary, electrical and mechanical systems, preventive maintenance, repairs, inventory and technical oversight of smaller yachts.
- Suitable for smaller yachts, charter and private vessels; often a solo engineer role.
Chief Engineer – up to 3000 kW / 500 GT
- Certification for Chief Engineer on yachts up to 3,000 kW and less than 500GT propulsion.
- Enables supervision of complex engineering systems, maintenance and repair of all mechanical, electrical, auxiliary and propulsion systems; planning and management of maintenance schedules, refits, system overhauls; coordination with technicians or contractors; and compliance with safety/regulatory standards.
- Suited for mid- to large-size yachts, superyachts and commercial operations where advanced technical and managerial skills are required.
